Saltwater & Freshwater Pearls: A World of Natural Beauty

Not all pearls are born the same, and that's exactly what makes them so extraordinary. From the sun-warmed lagoons of French Polynesia to the still rivers of China and Japan, each pearl carries the story of the water it came from, the creature that formed it, and the rare alchemy of time and nature that brought it into being.

At Elizabeth Blair, we work only with the finest producers in the world; because the pearl you wear deserves nothing less. Whether you're drawn to the drama of a Tahitian strand or the quiet elegance of a freshwater baroque, every gem in our collection is hand-selected to be the very best of its kind.

The Saltwater Pearls: Legacy, Prestige & Luster

Saltwater pearls are grown inside oysters in the open ocean, in some of the most pristine, remote waters on earth. They tend to produce just one pearl at a time, which means every gem is a true rarity. The result is a luster that's often described as metallic or mirror-like: light doesn't just reflect off the surface, it seems to pour from within.

Elizabeth Blair specializes in the crown jewels of the saltwater world:
Australian South Sea Pearls

Australian South Sea Pearls: The Queen of All Pearls

If there is a queen among pearls, it’s the Australian South Sea. Grown off the pristine coastlines of Australia, these are the largest and most luminous cultured pearls in existence, ranging from 9mm all the way past 20mm, in silky whites, champagnes, and silver blues.

Australian pearls are among the strongest, most durable pearls you can own. Their nacre is extraordinarily thick which gives them a depth of luster that simply cannot be replicated. The surface catches light in a way that makes you look twice. Then three times. Wear them once and you'll understand why collectors consider them the ultimate expression of pearl beauty.
Tahitian Pearls: Nature's Most Dramatic Gem

Tahitian Pearls: Nature's Most Dramatic Gem

Born from the lagoons of French Polynesia, Tahitian pearls are unlike anything else in the world of fine jewelry. Their colors (midnight black, peacock green, pistachio, aubergine, silver, and deep teal) are entirely natural. No treatments. No enhancements. Just the ocean doing what the ocean does, beautifully.

They are exceptionally strong pearls, with thick nacre and a luster that shifts and shimmers as you move. Each one is a little different from the last, which is part of what makes designing with them so alive. At Elizabeth Blair, Tahitian pearls are a cornerstone of our collection; we work with them in strands, ropes, statement rings, drop earrings, and one-of-a-kind custom creations that you'll wear for the rest of your life.
Akoya Pearls

Akoya Pearls: The Classic, Refined

The Akoya is the pearl that defined what a pearl could be. Cultivated primarily in Japan, these saltwater gems are celebrated for their near-perfect roundness and sharp, high-mirror luster. They're the strand your grandmother wore on her wedding day. They're also the strand that looks just as right with a blazer and jeans. Because of their delicate surface, proper pearl care is essential to maintaining this legendary radiance over generations.

Freshwater Pearls: Soul, Color & Grace

Freshwater Pearls
Grown inside freshwater mussels in the rivers and lakes of China, Japan, and the United States, freshwater pearls have a character all their own. Because the mussel usually produces its pearl without a bead nucleus at the center, freshwater pearls are solid through and through, which makes them remarkably resilient for everyday wear.

Their luster is softer and more velvety than the hard shine of their saltwater counterparts; a warmth that glows from within rather than flashing from the surface. And when it comes to color, freshwater pearls are among nature's most generous: lavender, blush, cream, champagne, deep aubergine. Every shade is naturally occurring, a gift from the mussel and the water it calls home.
A Note on Color

A Note on Color: Always Natural, Always Yours

Every pearl in our collection. from the iridescent depths of a Tahitian peacock to the luminous glow of an Australian white, possesses a color entirely its own, born from a silent alchemy of species, water, and nutrient. We never use dyes; what you see is a pure, unadulterated collaboration between the ocean and the mollusk.

Because these organic hues possess such depth, we take pride in our ability to curate the perfect match for the individual. Our expertise lies in identifying the subtle natural undertones, from warm creams to cool silvers, that harmonize with your skin tone, eye color, and hair. We aim to find the specific, sea-born luster that illuminates your natural palette and brings a bespoke radiance to your person.

FAQs

Are saltwater pearls more valuable than freshwater?
Saltwater pearls (particularly Australian South Sea and Tahitian) tend to command higher prices, simply because each oyster produces so few, and the conditions required to grow them are so specific. Japanese Akoya pearls are also in this category but  are smaller in size

Which pearls are the most durable?
Australian and Tahitian pearls are among the most resilient you'll find, thanks to their extraordinarily thick nacre. Freshwater pearls, composed of solid nacre throughout, are also exceptionally tough. Any pearl from Elizabeth Blair is chosen with longevity in mind; we source only from the best producers in the world, which means the quality is already built in.

Can I find both saltwater and freshwater options?
Absolutely! From Australian South Sea and Tahitian saltwater gems to beautifully shaped freshwater pearls in a full spectrum of natural colors, our collection reflects Elizabeth's 30+ years of deep relationships with the world's best pearl producers.
